Nystagmus (pronounced “ni-STAG-muhs”) is where people with it can’t control what their eyes do. For example, their eyes might twitch or look like they are constantly scanning pages.
It is only sometimes a thing youinherit from your parents. There are two main types of Nystagmus: infantile or congenital nystagmus, which appears in the first few months of life and is acquired and develops in later life.
Although it is widespread among schoolchildren, it is rare to be born with. According to the RNIB, only one in 1,000 people are born with this condition. Because of this, many people with nystagmus are unable to drive.
Life through my eyes
As reporters, we can’t always relate to everything we post, but I can, as I have lived with it my entire life.
